Water Harvesting
Agago district has many areas where groundwater is deep and difficult to access, due to the rocky nature of the soil in some parts of the district. Efforts by the District Local Government and partners to provide the community with deep and shallow wells have always resulted in dry wells. The area is typical of seasonal streams/rivers that dry up during the dry season. Over 90% of the houses are roofed with straw which makes it difficult to tap roof top water, and the available water sources are shared between animals and humans. Ultimately, this has resulted in community members especially women and children having to travel long distances in search for water.
Located in Lira Kato parish, Lira Kato Sub-county, Agago District has 78 households, with a total population of 400 people and neighbours Te-olim, Obur gulu, Ogul alwong and Ogul Odok villages. The overall population with all the 04 villages inclusive is 1,345 people. One of the most pressing challenge to the people of Kamrono is access to clean water. The nearest borehole is 1.5kms and the productivity of the borehole is low. By 2021, there was no single school within the village. The nearest primary schools are Oburgulu (4 km) and Lira Kato primary School (16km). Starting this year in February, the community requested the DLG to approve establishment of a school which was granted. The Oburgulu primary school is the newly formed community primary school for lower primary classes (p.1-P 4) with an enrolment of about 100 pupils. However due to limited resources, the school has only one temporary structure acting as a staff room, and the children attend classes under trees. The entire village depends on lira Kato Health center III located, located 17kms.
AidEnvironment started interventions in February 2021, and sofar:
− 10.8ha have been planted with 24,000 trees both indigenous and Exotic including fruit trees
− 1km covered with soil and water conservation structures
− 57 out of 78 households have constructed latrines - at the beginning, no single households had a latrine. They were practicing Open defecation (OD).
− Nursery bed established, with capacity of 26,000 tree seedlings to be planted on individual households
